LEFC Online Series

This is Jesus’ third and last trip to Jerusalem. He will stay a couple of weeks through the Feast of Dedication and then depart. After this, come His final days, and John will spend most of the rest of his Gospel on these. As hostility toward Jesus deepens end His end approaches, He takes great care in His movements while God’s proper timing is being worked out.

The story of the Healing of the Lame Man is a negative example, for he fails to believe in Jesus Christ. But, the story of the Healing of Man Born Blind in chapter 9 is a positive example, for that man does believe in Jesus Christ. We learn both from positive and negative examples. In this passage, Jesus is picking a fight, purposefully setting up a conflict in order to teach extensively.

We began observing the story of the Samaritan woman last Sunday. Our Lord Jesus intentionally sought out this woman and spoke to her about eternal life. But she kept her distance during the opening conversation. Now, we will see their dialogue develop and eventually lead to her conversion, as she learns that Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior from sin, and the new location of worship.The spiritual life conversation continues with two more topics: conviction of personal sin before God and true worship of the true God.

Jesus and His disciples were ministering and baptizing in the plain of the Jordan in the Judean countryside. Jesus decides to travel to Galilee by way of Samaria where He dialogues with a Samaritan woman on the topics of living water, her five ex-husbands, and true worship. He reveals His Messiahship to her and she believes as do many from her town. In our passage today, the focus is on true spiritual life, using water as a metaphor.
